Confessions Of A Dental Chicken

O.K. I have to admit it. I am afraid of the dentist. As a child it seemed that every visit to dentist I would have cavities. And I was terrified of shots….and the pain associated with having cavities filled without a shot at all. Don’t get me wrong, my childhood dentist was good and did good work but for whatever reason I was left with a lot of anxiety and fear that are with me to this day.

The bright side is that this fear and anxiety were one of the reasons I chose dentistry as my career. I really wanted to provide patients with quality dental care and give them a calm, relaxing and pain-free experience at the same time.

As an adult and just before beginning dental school I was being seen by a dentist by the name Dr. Levin in Thousand Oaks for some much needed dental work that I had put off for years due to my fears. He was very empathetic and explained the treatment to me and actually LISTENED to me. He was able to calm my fears and prescribed medication that relaxed me and allowed me (for the first time in my life) to get through a dental appointment without the fear, without white knuckling the dental chair and most importantly I was completely numb and didn’t feel a thing.

During my years of practice I have come to realize that there are so many people out there who avoid the dentist due to their fears, anxiety and the embarrassment that often comes with years of neglect and putting off much needed dental work. Many of these patients only seek out care when they are in extreme pain with a toothache, infection or dental abscess.

But there is good news. We now have ways of providing dental care in much more relaxed, calm and virtually painless setting. Often times patient’s fears can be calmed with the use of a simple pill that is taken before treatment. We can also use Nitrous Oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) which allows patients to be deeply relaxed instantaneously with the patient having no after effects and leaving the office completely alert and awake to go about their daily routine.

For patients with extreme anxiety about a visit to the dentist we also offer I.V. sedation. We work with a dental anesthesiologist that monitors the patient throughout the procedure and allows patients to comfortably sleep through the entire dental visit. This is a safe and affordable way to have much needed dental work completed.

So whatever it is that has been keeping you away from the dentist, we can patiently and calmly address those fears and concerns. Most importantly you WILL BE LISTENED TO. And I and my staff will treat you with the respect and non-judgmental attitude that you deserve. You can call the office at (805)499-3130 and our friendly team will answer any questions you may have and can arrange for a convenient complimentary consultation to discuss your needs.
