“I didn’t wear my retainers!!”

“I didn’t wear my retainers!!”

Over the years I’ve seen so many cases of patients that wore braces as a teenager and then didn’t wear the retainers that the orthodontist supplied them with. Maybe they lost their retainers…or broke them. Sometimes it was just out of laziness. And many times it was simply that they were never told they really should be wearing a retainer (at least at night) for the rest of their life in order to keep their teeth straight. Over time their teeth have “relapsed” and become crooked, rotated or separated once again.

I recently saw a patient like this in my office. When she was 16 years old she had full braces on for almost 2 years but then failed to wear her retainers. Now at age 25 her upper teeth are still pretty straight but her lower front teeth have become crooked.

She really wanted her teeth straight again so I offered her a couple of options including Invisalign which are clear removable retainers that she could wear for about 1 year in order to solve the problem. She was honest though and told me that she probably wouldn’t wear them all the time and she’d just spend a lot of money and time and end up where she started….with crooked teeth. So I then offered her the option of Powerprox Six Month Braces which could straighten her teeth in about 6 months, much quicker than Invisalign and other more involved orthodontic treatments. The brackets and wires used with Powerprox are tooth colored and while not invisible are certainly more cosmetic than traditional metal braces. This is an affordable and quick way of straightening teeth and making smiles beautiful once again. Here she is just after we placed her braces.

She will now have these braces on for about 6 months and maybe as little as 4 months if everything goes well. I’ll keep you posted on this case as we progress.
